Here's a letter I sent to the New York Times on10/19/03... they probably won't publish it, so I figured I would:
To the Editor:
Re: “Wal-Mart, Driving Workers and Supermarkets Crazy,” by Steven Greenhouse (News Article, 10/19/03)
I applaud the position Californian supermarkets have taken vis-à-vis their employees’ union – in light of Wal-Mart entering their market. Unions seldom realize that their demands often lead to the demise of businesses. Wal-Mart’s business plan clearly works for the company, and most importantly, its customers. If unionized Californian supermarkets can’t compete with Wal-Mart, they will close, and union employees will loose more than health care. Some argue that Wal-Mart pays substandard wages. Relative to union wages, that may be true, but consider the yearly household income of a husband and wife both working at Wal-Mart. They would earn $28K, nearly twice the poverty line for a family of three. Not too shabby.
